Uneven Heating and Cooling? Why Some Rooms Never Feel Right
Published October 14, 2026 ยท More articles
The living room is fine, but the upstairs bedrooms are stuffy in summer and the room over the garage is freezing in January. Uneven temperatures are one of the most common comfort complaints in Akron homes, especially older ones and story-and-a-half houses.
Why It Happens
Your thermostat only knows the temperature where it hangs. Every other room depends on getting the right amount of air through the ducts, and on how well that room holds onto heat or cool air.
The Common Causes
1. Ductwork problems
Long duct runs, crushed or disconnected ducts in attics and crawlspaces, and undersized branch ducts all starve far-off rooms. Leaky ducts can lose a meaningful share of their air before it reaches the room.
2. Not enough return air
Air has to get back to the furnace. Rooms with no return, or with doors kept closed, can't take in as much supply air.
3. Closed or blocked registers
Closing vents in unused rooms seems smart, but it can raise pressure in the ducts and cut airflow everywhere.
4. Heat rises
Upstairs rooms gain heat in summer, and older homes often have a single system with ducts designed mainly for heating. That's why the second floor runs hot.
5. Insulation and windows
Rooms over garages, additions, sunrooms and finished attics often have less insulation or more glass. They lose heat in winter and gain it in summer faster than the rest of the house.
6. System sizing and fan speed
An oversized system short-cycles and never runs long enough to mix the air. A blower set too low can't push air to distant rooms.
Fixes That Work
| Cause | Fix |
|---|---|
| Leaky or crushed ducts | Seal and repair ductwork |
| Missing returns | Add a return or a transfer grille |
| Hot upstairs in summer | Adjust dampers, raise the blower speed, run the fan on circulate |
| Rooms over garages or additions | Duct improvements, insulation, or a ductless mini-split. โ Heat pumps |
| Oversized or single-stage system | At replacement, a properly sized two-stage or variable-speed system. โ Furnace replacement ยท AC replacement |
| Thermostat in a bad spot | Relocate it, or add a smart thermostat with room sensors. โ Thermostats |
What You Can Try Today
- Replace the filter to restore airflow.
- Open every register and move furniture off vents and returns.
- Run the fan on "on" or "circulate" to mix air between floors.
- Keep interior doors open, or note which rooms have no return.
- Note which rooms and when: summer, winter or both. It helps diagnose the cause.
